I was a skeptical after reading some other reviews (for other colors for the same crock) that mentioned a leaky spout. We did not have this problem at all. If the gaskets are installed properly (the directions are easy to miss) and tighten the nut down well there should not be any problems.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this because I was trying to go flame-less with my large-jar Yankee candles and do so quicker than standard warming plates, which take quite a while to melt such a candle. Well, this fit the bill alright. Within 15 minutes you can smell the candle wonderfully. A short while later, the whole jar is liquid. All that is great, but...
The very thing I wanted, speedy flame-less fragrance for an extended period of time, is also the main downside. It activates *all* the fragrance in the candle at all times. So, what you get is a strong fragrance for a much shorter period of time. Whereas a large jar Yankee candle will last a good 125+ hours, I got about 15 (yes, fifteen) hours of strong fragrance, which quickly declined thereafter until all I had was a jar of wax.
Since there's no temperature control, there's no way to prolong the candle life. After two candles, I no longer use the warmer. I gave it three stars because it does exactly what it claims and is definitely a great candle warmer. I suppose I should have foreseen the outcome as, in hindsight, it is clear that a full jar warmer would heat the entire contents at all times.
Two parting notes:
1) This would be great for using every last ounce of candle. The remnants that don't get burned via wick could be used in the warmer, but a little overkill.
2) Once you melt a candle in the warmer, the wick drops to the bottom when liquefied. Thus, it's a one-way road as you won't be able to burn the candle again.

It's solid, has a good plastic protective collar that sits on top of the opening, it doesn't leak and it looks very nice sitting on the island of my kitchen. It's so much easier to load the bottles on this one than the hot/cold one at work and it is guaranteed to be lead free paint. I just couldn't bring myself to pay for the other crocks, they were too expensive. This was a great deal and because it is a litte lighter than the other crocks it is easier to hand wash. I would highly recomend this to anyone looking for a water crock and doesn't want to spend an arm and a leg.

(More customer reviews)I bought this just over a year ago and we've used it extensively. As long as you do soups and very moist meats (lots of liquids) it works fine. It is much too hot for most slow cooking and it will dry out foods on the warm setting.
Even with all of that, I got used to using it. However, the handle to the lid just broke off today and you must buy a whole new lid if you are out of warranty. That is $18.00!!! Rival says that this isn't a known issue and so maybe I'm the unlucky one. Also, when I called customer support, they were very unwilling to give me information about this problem. It seemed to me that they are aware of it, but don't want it publicized. When I asked the rep how long she had worked there, she replied that she couldn't give me that information because of "security concerns". I just wanted to know what level of experience she had!
If you are not going to leave it alone for very long or you only cook with lots of liquids, this may work out for you as it did for me for a year. If you want to have a long lasting more versatile slow cooker, you should probably look elsewhere. And after reading the reviews on most of the other Rival crockpots, I have decided that my initial feelings were justified and I will take Rival products out of my considerations.

(More customer reviews)I actually own the black version of this pot, which has apparently been discontinued in favor of the stainless steel. Aside from the color of the skin and slightly different knobs and handles on the base, they are identical.
The controls are very easy to use. You turn it on, set your temperature (HI or LO) punch the clock button to set the time (minimum is 4 hours) then press COOK. That's it! It shows the remaining cooking time on the display, and once the time is up, the cooker will beep and then switch to warming mode to keep the food from going cold or overcooking. The only thing I don't like is there is no delay timer. You can't set it to come on in four hours and then cook for another four hours.
The cord is a bit on the short side, but according to the manual that's for safety. You can use an extension cord if necessary. I have not noticed any uneven heating or hot spots in the base. The skin does get hot to the touch, so make sure there's nothing flammable around and that it is out of reach of children and pets. I don't think it would get hot enough to scorch the counter top, but I use mine on a jelly roll pan with two trivets underneath in case it boils over.
The crock is removable for cleaning. It's made of glazed ceramic and is very heavy. It is large enough to fit a whole fryer chicken as long as you truss the bird. You can use it in the microwave and put it in the refrigerator, but not use it in the oven or on the stove top. The lid fits well.
Overall, I'm quite satisfied with my purchase. If you don't care about the looks, keep an eye out for the discontinued black model if you can find it on clearance. I bought mine for less than twenty dollars brand new and consider it money well spent.

Green is my kitchen color and the clear lid enables checking on the cooking process without removing the lid. I also like that it is oval and more horizontal than vertical. My old crock pot was top heavy and often tipped in the car if not secured. I put it to use immediately. Unfortunately, although used according to directions, the liner developed a hairline crack after the first use. I called Rival and they instructed me to return it to the store as defective. Well, not wanting to upset my mother-in-law and create a commotion, that may be tricky to do...I wish they had been more responsive. After all, they sold their product. Now it is at my inconvenience to make it right. They should have sent a new liner.

Hamilton Beach 33141 4-Quart Oval Slow Cooker Review

(More customer reviews)There are 2 kinds of slow cookers, depending on where the heat source is. This Hamilton Beach unit has heat coils around the sides which stay hot, as opposed to slow cookers with heat sources in the base, which turn on and off intermittently. I have found that with this type of constant heat slow cooker (with the coils around the sides) I don't need to add as much liquid. In fact I cut the liquid (water or stock) by half of what the recipes call for when I use this cooker. The 4 quart size is good for roasts up to 3 or so pounds. If you slow cook chicken or game hens in it, cut the bird up into pieces and remove the skins. Don't slow cook a whole uncut bird (in any kind of slow cooker).
This is a nice little slow cooker for a single, a couple, or a small family. I have had no problems with the knob* (as yet).
*The knob problem probably arises from the close proximity of the heating element to the knob, as opposed to slow cookers that heat from the bottom, away from the knob...
NOVEMBER 2007 UPDATE: We still love this little slow cooker. It is perfect for making Irish beef stews all winter long. The knob on ours has not broken yet but we try to be gentle with it, due to the warnings we read.
DECEMBER 2008 UPDATE: We're still using this 4 quart slow cooker. We have used it for a lot of baked beans and slow cooked barbecue beef dishes on the weekends. The knob has not broken yet, but we are not rough with it either. We really like this little slow cooker.
FEBRUARY 2009 UPDATE: The cooker still works fine. We have used it once a week or more this winter, for everything from navy beans to chuck roasts. The knob has not broken yet (we are gentle with the knob if it's hot).
JANUARY 2010 UPDATE: The cooker still works well and the knob is still intact. Took it to work last Tuesday, cooked stuffed chicken cutlets & veggies in the kitchenette/break room, everybody loved them, there were no leftovers.

When it said programable, I thought it meant I get to choose the setting & time, but really it just offers High/Low & 8-10hrs or 2-4 hours. It does have a automatic warmer. The only thing I realy do not like is that the glass top does not fit tightly onto the cooker. It seems 1 or 2 sizes too small? Not sure if this is a defect or not, but not loving it. Otherwise, it is just a good slow cooker.

(More customer reviews)Electric steamers have had divided inserts for years, so that you can cook multiple dishes at the same time. When I saw the Slow Cooker Mate, my first thought was "Why hasn't someone done that with a slow cooker before?"
It's a great idea. You can cook a main dish in the large insert, and one or two side dishes in the small insert. The operation of the cooker is pretty straightforward... slow cookers are about the simplest appliance in the kitchen, so there's not much to say there. It has all the basic features. The maximum cooking time is a very respectable 18 hours.
The large insert is 6 quarts, the small insert has two one-quart sections. Of course, you can't fill the inserts up to the top, so the usable capacity of the large insert is 4.5 - 5 quarts, and 3 cups for the small insert sections.
One surprise I got is that the small insert is quite deep, and takes a lot of capacity from the large insert. The instruction book says to only fill the large insert half way (3 quarts) when using the small insert. That's still plenty of capacity if you're making two side dishes.
The instruction book includes several menus for a main dish and two side dishes, which is enough to give you an idea of how to make your own menus.
I'm very happy with the Slow Cooker Mate. It's a product that was long overdue.
