I have tried to make 2 cheese dishes in the last few days (broccoli cheese soup and scalloped potatoes and chicken) and the directions instruct you to put the food on low for a certain amount of time. The Rival 3 temp crockpot (low, high and warm) has boiled both cheese dishes to make the cheese curdle). Upon further investigation, my husband discovered that many owners of the Rival crockpot experience the same thing. We are trashing this one and getting a slow cooker with temperature settings.

Back to Basics PC17581 Gourmet Treat Dipper, Red Review

Back to Basics PC17581 Gourmet Treat Dipper, Red
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What a TREAT this dipper is! We've used it for the first time today and already have so many other ideas to experiment with.
For starters, the 'set' consists of a burner 'pot' in a footed bowl. I was worried that perhaps since I have younger children and the bowl being wider at the top that it maybe top heavy but it's actually sturdy and doesn't wobble which is important to me. It has a very easy to use, large dial to turn the device: OFF, LOW or HIGH. It comes with a ceramic fluted inner bowl that you melt your food into and a glass top with a knob to hold onto and 2 dipper forks that look like mini forked ladles. The cord used to plug the device into is fairly short so unless you use some sort of extension cord, you'll have to find a sturdy surface to place the Gourmet Treat Dipper right by an outlet. Personally I like this feature so that there are less chances of one tripping on a cord if left dangling. We used it on our kitchen island that has an outlet and placed the Dipper in the middle of the island.
The directions have mentioned in at least 2 places to NOT allow ANY water at all in the chocolate so we were really careful to dry the lid, pot and any utensils and foods we had planned to use.
We first tried melting chocolate chips. Since the directions state that it takes approximately 40 minutes to melt a bag of chocolate chips or 1 bar of chocolate, we used 8 oz of semi-sweet chocolate chips. We washed & dried our strawberries and had these mini chocolate chip cookies we wanted to try as well. Since I have had issues in the past melting chocolate on the stove and having it burn frequently, I decided to test out the higher heat and see if I could detect ANY chocolate burning at all and I couldn't - even with a small amount of chocolate in the bowl (8oz of chocolate chips melted to about 1/4 capacity in the bowl). I was pleasantly surprised that some of the chips started to melt after 5 minutes. After about 25 minutes, with some stirring every now and then, our we had nice, thick melted chocolate.
It may be because we are inexperienced with them but so far, the dipping forks are a bit awkward for us to use. We found that dipping the strawberries by hand while holding onto the green stems / leaves are best which is not much for the little ones because they had to simply stand by and watch since the white ceramic bowl AND the red, heating bowl tend to get very hot.
Next came the mini chocolate chip cookies. The boys were able to lower the cookies in the chocolate just fine but since the chocolate was fairly thick, they struggled in trying to 'drown' their cookies in the chocolate since the cookie tended to stay on top of the melted chocolate so we dumped the cookie in the bowl and had to push the cookie in the chocolate in order to cover it up then scoop it up with the dipper fork (it did come in handy for this!) and we dumped it on a plate covered with parchment paper.
On our second round, we added 1/2 tsp of coconut oil to the chocolate and it turned out to me MUCH smoother in consistency and was easier to 'dunk' the cookies into. The instruction pamphlet does mention that if you are going to add anything to dilute the chocolate, to not add anything but vegetable oil (no water or milk) or you will ruin your batch of chocolate.
After our chocolate experiment, we rinsed the bowl out (with hot water since our bowl was hot...we didn't want to wash it w/ cold before it cooled down and risk it cracking due to varying extreme temperatures) we then melted 5 caramel sheets (the instructions suggest 1 bag of caramel candies). These took a bit longer to fully melt, even with stirring encouraged because the middle tended to glob together. We started out with HIGH heat then I noticed that some of the melted caramel started to darken on the sides (slightly burned color) so we kept the temperature at LOW for the caramel until we finished. It took about 35-40 minutes to fully melt the caramel at LOW temperature, the book stated it would take this long so no surprised there. We then stuck popsicle sticks in our apples and sumberged them in the melting pot, pulled them out and smoothed over some areas that had excess caramel wtih another wooden stick and placed them in mason jars so they would dry without touching anything.
After we dipped a couple of apples, I wanted to see if the caramel would in fact burn at high heat...I could have missed it, but I didn't read anywhere in the instruction manual about NOT turning caramel specifically at high heat (it does state that some candy will burn at high heat but it does not state any specific foods). Sure enough after 20 minutes, half of our caramel burned and stuck to the ceramic sides.
I see endless possibilities with this little thing! There are chocolate stores in the mall that sell candy coated apples for $8-$14!! We could do our own at home and give them for gifts from $1-$3.00!! You could do one layer in caramel, coat it with crushed nuts, allow it to dry then do a second layer in chocolate with crushed toffee, wrap it and give it away as a really nice gift.
I happen to have a bag of these chocolate chips when I made some items for my son's school but we generally don't eat a lot of sweets...I make my own 'no sugar' chocolate from: raw cocoa powder, raw cacao butter and powdered lakanto or stevia...I'll be trying a version using the powdered Body Ecology powdered Lakanto and dip some healthier foods in it to experiment with some healthier options.
What I love about this little thing is that it's nice in appearance, it's VERY easy to clean, and most of all that it can be used for different foods - NOT just candy! You can use it for melted cheese / queso, other warm / hot dips from veggie dips to chili.
If I can make a suggestion to the manufacturer...I'd ask that they create a ceramic bowl with a SMIDGE deeper groove so that it's more seated and has less of a chance of sliding off should someone move it from one area to another. We kept it stationary so we didn't have any issues but I could see how the lid COULD slide off if being moved and someone weren't careful.
I would highly suggest this item - just test out the food at the LOW temp FIRST or just not leave your foods at the HIGH temp unattended to avoid burning your foods. Don't let the high temp issue deter you...we melted the chocolate on high and kept it at high with no issues at all. I think this would make a GREAT gift that you can use for anywhere from 2 people for an intimate setting to an entire large family gathering. I plan to use this for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Valentine's Day! I CANNOT verbally express HOW DELICIOUS the chocolate covered strawberries are!!! YUMMY!!

Nesco 18-Quart Roaster Oven with Porcelain Cookwell, Millennium Silver Review

I purchased two of these roasters to cook Christmas dinner. It made the best ham, and pork I have cooked in my life, moist and hot and once it was seasoned and clicked on it practically cooked itself.
HOWEVER EVEN THOUGH I give it five stars for being a fantastic extra portable oven
Nesco sends this item out in need of being pre-used before cooking in for the first time.
Had my son not used it the week before to make sausage and meatballs Christmas dinner would have been ruined!! AND my house would have reeked of burnt plastic!!! The initial odor was quite bad .
The oven took over 7 hrs. plugged in outside to burn off this odor. I have had toaster ovens, coffepots toasters, electric fry pans etc. and pulled them out of the box washed and used them instantly! Nesco would do well to burn the oven off on their own site. I called customer service and let "poor nice Hazel" have it....hopefully she will pass along my suggestion and get a promotion to boot!
Also, I have no garage and had it been a rainy day I would not have had a ventilated covered area to burn it off in. I do see another review where this was an issue for the man who bought it... if you read this I agree but I wish you had kept the oven its all up hill after burn off! YES it is true, they do state in the directions to run oven before using for the first time BUT this is inside the box. This could be a real deal breaker for someone who didn't open it up at least a day before they needed it!
Bottom line it is a fantastic product. Easy clean up & versatile can be used to cook & keep food warm, use indooror or on hot days why not cook outdoors , good looking , roomy, like having an extra oven only when you need it, and it even stores neatly within itself. Yes I can say it does what I need quite well!

Several hours of my life were wasted pondering what rice cooker to purchase. There are dozen options available and I too was originally getting sucked into the though larger price tag =better rice, how wrong I was. Simple, easy to use, affordable and perfect brown rice on the first try (no easy task). Save your money for Vegas, this is all you need.

A complete, healthy, fat-free meal can easily be prepared in this electric rice cooker. The nonstick removable inner pot produces up to 6 cups of cooked rice, while the steaming basket holds enough vegetables or shrimp for one or two hungry people. Simple to operate, the cooker features just one switch and two settings, cook and keep warm. During cooking, a red light is illuminated; when cooking is complete, the switch automatically reverts to the keep-warm setting and a yellow light comes on. Moisture and nutrients are sent back into the cooker by the domed glass lid, which also allows for easy viewing. After cooking, the rice should be allowed to sit for about five to seven minutes before removing the lid. Accessories include a measuring cup and a plastic rice paddle for stirring and serving the rice. The cup, paddle, pot, and steamer all should be washed by hand in hot, soapy water after each use. The rice cooker, including its stay-cool side loop handles, measures approximately 11-1/2 by 8-1/2 by 10 inches.

6qt Round Slow Cooker Review

6qt Round Slow Cooker
Average Reviews:

My Rival 6 quart slow cooker is falling apart after only six months. First the High/Low/Off switch broke off in my hand (and no, I did not manhandle it.) Then a carrying handle broke off, spilled hot stew everywhere and scalded my hands. Then the handle for the glass lid broke off under the weight of the glass lid alone, and the other carrying handle also broke off under the weight of the EMPTY crock pot (and I mean empty -- the metal shell only without the ceramic inner bowl.) The plastic of all the handles literally disintegrated.
There's really no excuse for this, My parents bought a Hamilton crock pot in the mid 1970s that still works today (after many moves.) My first experience with a Rival Product was their 4070 Hot Pot Express (which was excellent and has served me well for 12 years, though the RIVAL 4071 replaced -- and probably improved -- the 4070.) The 6 qt. round slow cooker cannot make the same claim.

Crock-Pot SCV702 7-Quart Oval Manual Slow Cooker, Red

I just felt compelled to share what I've found out about slow cookers.
We purchased this model slow cooker a few months back to use about 1x per week.
After using it several times, I discovered to my horror that the ceramic inserts - the darker color glazes all contain lead to some degree. Despite the manufacturers claim that their slow cookers abide by the FDA standards set in place, I did not feel safe using this product. Although the amount of lead in the slow cooker may abide by FDA standards, this is not zero, I believe that the FDA allows 7ppm to leach into the food over a 24 hour period to be considered "safe". There is currently no known safe level for lead exposure. Since I am cooking for my family, including a 2 year old, I decided to stop using this appliance. Lead doesn't leave your system, and accumulates over time, this is not exactly what I want swimming around my homemade chicken soup! After contacting the company, and asking if their slow cooker had any amounts of lead, and if so how much, I was told that information was proprietary! So, in other words, yes, our product contains lead, but we won't tell you how much it contains. Ridiculous!
After doing a bit more research online, I have come to find out that the white slow cookers are the way to go. Hamilton Beach was tested and found to have zero levels of lead leaching into the food after heating it for 2 days.
Bottom line is do your research before buying these appliances. Stay away from the dark color inserts, stick to white, and hamilton beach appears to be the safest from the research I've done.

I've had this little crock pot for nearly a year and I use it much more often than my big fancy programmable slow cooker. The 2qt size is just right for heating up frozen bricks of homemade soup, stew, spaghetti sauce, etc. Put something frozen in at breakfast time and it's ready for lunch. Because the high setting runs hot it can simmer leftover meat and veg to make stock, and it's also good for cooking other long-simmer foods such as beans, lentils and wheat berries. Or just regular crock-pot meals for one or two people. It doesn't take up much counter space, either. Not so useful for a large family perhaps, but it's ideal for mine.

I loved my crockpot, but the crock part lasted less than two years (and yes, I followed instructions regarding not immersing a hot crock in cold water, and filling at least half way). The crock cracked slightly after using only a few times (which I read somewhere was normal). As of today, the crock part is no longer usable and I see that the company's website doesn't have replacement parts for this particular model, which means I'll have to buy an entire new slow cooker. I loved my crockpot and used it all the time, but having recently lost a job, I can't really afford to replace it at this time. I'm very disappointed. I expect my appliances to last more than a year and a half.

Crockpot 6-Quart Oval Manual Slow Cookers Review

Crockpot 6-Quart Oval Manual Slow Cookers
Average Reviews:

Contrary to the August 29, 2005 reviewer's comments about "operator
error", this crock pot truly has a problem with heating at too high of a level, to a point of being dangerous (and yes, I did read the instruction book!). I have been using crock pots for 26 years, and never had any meals burn. This particular pot burned each of the four meals I made with it, and I used recipes which I have been making for years in my older Rival model of the same size. The last straw was when I came home to a somewhat smokey kitchen caused by a meal which burned after only 4 1/2 hours of cook time on LOW (I suppose the HI setting would be useful for launching rockets to the moon?). Had I not come home until closer to the usual 8 to 10 hours cook time for that particular recipe, I might not have had a home to walk into!
I agree with reviewer J. Jarrard - my foods burned primarily on just one side of the crock. The heating element is not only too hot, but it also heats unevenly.
I have read in other reviews that in recent years Rival has set the temperature of their pots higher for food safety purposes. Does anyone know if this is true, and if so, what other options are out there (i.e. - other brands, or perhaps other Rival models which don't have this problem)? Thanks!

Rival RO180 18-Quart Roaster Oven, White Review

Rival RO180 18-Quart Roaster Oven, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this a couple of years ago to help with the Thanksgiving load on the oven. But now we wouldn't cook a turkey any other way, and I love it for big batches of soup and chili. The turkey cooks in far less time than in an oven, and it's wonderfully moist and flavorful. It makes huge batches of soup that are not possible in my crock pot, so is invaluable for those extra large recipes. And it's very easy to transport.
I really appreciate having the oven available for other dishes when I use my roaster. And when my oven was being repaired ,we used the roaster in it's place, and I was pleasantly surprised at what I could cook in it! I just used it dry, and put my baking pans inside, and my dishes came out just as good as when using the conventional oven. It's large enough to easily accomodate a 9x13 pan.
The one big drawback is you have to really watch the temperature. It gets hotter than you set the dial, so I compensate and cook at a lower temperature. It can be annoying at first, but once you get used to your roaster, it's not so big of a deal. But be prepared until you know what your roaster will do. And the removable pan you cook in is very big and not very nonstick, so can be a pain to wash unless you have an extra large sink. Spraying it down in the sink while it's still hot does help with clean-up, but it's never easy to wash. It does take up a lot of counter space while using it.
I have the buffet inserts, and they work great for taco/nacho parties. I put the hot items in their own compartment (meat, beans, cheese sauce), and they stay hot the entire time. And, again, it's portable, so you can take it to an event to use this way. If we have a big crowd at the holidays and serve family style, I put in the buffet insert after the turkey is done, fill them with the hot sides (potatoes, stuffing, veggies, etc), and it keeps those 3 hot dishes hot through out the entire meal. Very handy!! If you do a web search, you'll find a ton of great ideas and recipes for your roaster. There are very dedicated roaster users out there that have great information that I recommend you look at.
Like I said, I initially got it for holiday meals, but find I'm reaching for it for so many other events. Just watch the temperature!

I bought this just over a year ago and we've used it extensively. As long as you do soups and very moist meats (lots of liquids) it works fine. It is much too hot for most slow cooking and it will dry out foods on the warm setting.
Even with all of that, I got used to using it. However, the handle to the lid just broke off today and you must buy a whole new lid if you are out of warranty. That is $18.00!!! Rival says that this isn't a known issue and so maybe I'm the unlucky one. Also, when I called customer support, they were very unwilling to give me information about this problem. It seemed to me that they are aware of it, but don't want it publicized. When I asked the rep how long she had worked there, she replied that she couldn't give me that information because of "security concerns". I just wanted to know what level of experience she had!
If you are not going to leave it alone for very long or you only cook with lots of liquids, this may work out for you as it did for me for a year. If you want to have a long lasting more versatile slow cooker, you should probably look elsewhere. And after reading the reviews on most of the other Rival crockpots, I have decided that my initial feelings were justified and I will take Rival products out of my considerations.

I was thrilled to receive this from my thoughtful 90 year old mother-in-law for Christmas. Green is my kitchen color and the clear lid enables checking on the cooking process without removing the lid. I also like that it is oval and more horizontal than vertical. My old crock pot was top heavy and often tipped in the car if not secured. I put it to use immediately. Unfortunately, although used according to directions, the liner developed a hairline crack after the first use. I called Rival and they instructed me to return it to the store as defective. Well, not wanting to upset my mother-in-law and create a commotion, that may be tricky to do...I wish they had been more responsive. After all, they sold their product. Now it is at my inconvenience to make it right. They should have sent a new liner.
