Filters in the lid eliminate any odors even if the pail hasn't been emptied in awhile. The 1/2 gallon size is adequate for several days accumulation for us, and when the pail is full the design makes it easy to transport to the main compost bin outside. Filters are a little on the expensive side but they are washable and reusable. We have had the unit for almost a month and have not needed to replace the filter. I expect each filter will last for several months.
